By Danielle Schubert-
I've become a pizza snob, amongst other things. Traveling to Italy created a monster in me; someone who craves light delicious cheese, airy thin crust dough and clean, crisp and fresh flavor toppings. Sitting in any piazza, we would eat the to-go squares of this cheesy goodness before heading out into the medieval core of Florence for parties, dinner or nights at the club. Under the warm Tuscan skies, we would eat fresh, organic pizza with just-made pesto or locally grown tomatoes. The smell of basil would linger long after it had been consumed.
I continuously long for Florence nights like
those; the place and the pizza. I'm happy to report that Tony Tutto Pizza in Mill Valley has done a wonderful job in recreating that experience, and providing their version of the light, crispy pizza in the appropriate serving sizes to be eaten on premises, or taken to go.
Family owned, the husband and wife work tirelessly behind the counter creating vegetarian (or vegan) pizzas. Tony, a vegetarian himself, makes sure these simple, yet well balanced pizzas are far from boring. Their margherita is light; the homemade sauce is so incredibly flavorful that you want to fold it up and eat it up in a minute. Instead, I forced myself to eat it old school, Italian-style in order to savor the cheesy goodness for a bit longer. The pesto on our second pizza, was light, homemade and not oily. I could taste each delicate flavor and the cheese came through, but not overwhelmingly.
The spinach salad was dressed with a delicate lemon oil that that was tangy and sweet at the same time. Tossed with ricotta and fresh, petite tomatoes, it was refreshing but I thought a bit too small to satiate our "we love salad" moment. We also tried lasagna, which was delicious with not too much cheese and a savory sauce paired with perfectly cooked pasta sheets.
My true test of how great a restaurant can be, is whether or not they can convince someone into liking something they've never been fond of. My girlfriend isn't fond of anything smoky tasting but we ordered a smoky mozzarella pizza and guess who ended up eating most of it?!
We left feeling like we had eaten with family; full and happy.
Like the small, delicious hole-in-the-wall pizza places in Florence, Tony Tutto only takes cash, no credit or debit cards. My girl and I will go back soon, grabbing a few pizzas to go and taking them to eat on the Tiburon shoreline on a warm summer night while watching the lights of San Francisco sparkle on the Bay. It's not the Piazza della Republica in Florence's medieval core, but sitting with her on a summer night in our hometown eating delicious pizza sounds just perfect to me.
