Sick Sea Lions Being Brought To Sausalito Center

Courtesy Marine Mammal Center Nearly a hundred ill California sea lions have been brought into the Marine Mammal Center in the Marin Headlands suffering from a bacterial infection of the kidneys; leptospirosis.  The infection occurs in cycles in sea lion populations, usually every 4-5 years, and this year appears to be one of the cycles.  NOAA, UC of Davis and Penn State University officials are all looking at potential causes of the disease which causes severe dehydration, kidney damage and death. Sushi Ran's Chef Runs Over The Competition

The master chef at Sausalito's Sushi Ran, Mitsunori Kusakabe, just won top honors in the Eat-Japan Sushi Awards competition in London.  Kusakabe took first place after competing against sushi chefs from around the world including Japan, Russia, England and the U.S.  Kusakabe's dish, "Seven Rice Samurai" dish impressed the judges with techniques that transformed rice including freezing, sauteing, fermentation and frying, but you won't find that dish on the menu at Sushi Ran.  That dish is too complex to prepare at the restaurant.  Kusakabe's boss is thrilled and claimed the honor means he's the "top sushi chef in the world."

Kusakabe began his formal training as a sushi chef when he was 20, and has worked in Kyoto, New York and Miami Beach.  Here's the full story in the IJ.

Lance To Ride In Tour of California? Maybe...

Lance Armstrong/photo by BenutzerThis could all be a rumor but according to some news reports, cycling phenom Lance Armstrong is going to come out of retirement and will join the Astana racing team.  The reports say he hopes to participate in five road races, including the Amgen Tour of California in 2009 which has a stage in Sausalito.   However, the Amgen Tour of California website has zilch about the news.  MoreMarin contacted Amgen's media relations office and we were told "it's all just speculation now and we have no comment."  The racing team Astana, however, told AP he was not joining their team.  Stay tuned.   (Photo courtesy of Benutzer/Hase)

Sausalito Not Too Fond Of Prostitutes Now

"Lovable massages" on the "SF waterfront."  That internet come-on, along with community complaints prompted police officers to pay a visit to the Marin Therapy Center, on Bridgeway in Sausalito.  A proposition to one of the officers, landed 21 year-old Alameda resident, Sara Hanson in jail.  History buffs will remember that Sausalito wasn't always this intolerant of the oldest profession in the world.   Famous SF brothel owner and madam, Sally Stanford moved to Sausalito, opened a restaurant and was elected mayor in 1976.  Read more about the arrest here.

These Guys Put Leona Helmsley To Shame

Update: Here's another, longer version of the story in an SFGate article.

Imagine someone sawing a hole in your living room floor, or cutting your phone and electrical lines.  Or even worse, cutting the support floor beams under your apartment.  Apparently this all happened to a San Francisco tenant, by his landlords, a couple with an address in Sausalito among others.

EPA To Marin: Fix The Sewage Spewage!

The Environmental Protection Agency told southern Marin County to clean up its act and fix the decrepit sewer system, or face more problems like the sewage spills that plagued the County in January.  Huge amounts of rain, deteriorating pipes and a series of errors caused millions of gallons of raw sewage on January 25th and 31st.  February wasn't much better, as several smaller spills in other parts of Marin spilled into the Bay. Pretty embarrassing for a county that considers itself environmentally friendly.

Sausalito Author Hit Bottom & Then Some...

If you thought your life was a wreck, you should read this Marin IJ feature about Sausalito author, Wendy Merrill.  Merrill's life began to spiral out of control at the age of 16, when her mother committed suicide.  Bouts of bulimia, anorexia, alcohol abuse and very bad choices in male partners followed her into adulthood.  She's chronicles these tales in a just released book; "Falling Into Manholes: The Memoir of a Bad/Good Girl".  Merrill will discuss her book tomorrow night at the Mill Valley Book Depot and on Saturday at The Book Passage in Corte Madera.
