Feature!- Giving In Marin with Meals Of Marin

Rita is lying in bed, and laughing.  The 88 year-old is recounting a few funny stories of an earlier, good time.  Except for the fact that you can clearly see she is bedridden, it would be hard to tell that times are not so good these days for the longtime Marin resident.

Welcome to the second installment in our series, Giving in Marin.

Feature!- Anger And Hope At Anti Prop 8 Rally In San Rafael

No On 8 "We will win!"

That was the rallying cry, and overall theme by Marin residents today at a gay marriage rights rally, on San Rafael City Hall steps.  It was part of a nationwide effort, Join The Impact, which called on gay rights advocates and supporters to rally against the passage of Proposition 8 in last week's election.

Carpool Lane Opens On 101...At Least In One Direction

Commuters going South Bound this morning got some long overdue relief in the morning rush. Caltrans opened a mile-long carpool lane stretching from Central San Rafael to the 101/580 interchange.  As this ABCVideo shows, traffic was moving smoothly, although it was probably really early.  We're sure commuters are looking forward to January when both South Bound and North Bound continuous carpool lanes will be up and running.

Rodent Control Using Owls

In the category of very cool, is the Hungry Owl Project.  Based in San Rafael, the organization builds and installs owl boxes in wineries, farms and backyards to control the rat population.  Apparently a family of owls can eat up to 20 rats in a single night making them tops in natural pest control.  Students at San Rafael High School helped build the wooden boxes in shop class.  Owls don't build nests, opting to hang out in barns, dead trees and abandoned nests so the owl boxes come in handy when there are no shelter structures already in place.  The Marin IJ has the complete feature story...  (photo courtesy of Hungry Owl Project website)

Election Day 2008 - A Marin County Look

Obama supporter GOP ladies in red If the Republicans are the Party of Joe the Plumber, and the Democrats are the Party of the Elite, then someone forgot to tell the Marin folks that.

Marin Democrats celebrated the historic victory of Barack Obama while spilling out of a tiny, overcrowded storefront on 4th Street in downtown San Rafael, while the GOP tried their best to put a good face on the resounding defeat of John McCain at the Harbor Point Tennis and Swim Club in Strawberry.

Election Day 2008- San Rafael Voters

Polling place Inspector John Ortega There was a bit of a lull at the Pickleweed Community Center in San Rafael, so we got a chance to speak with John Ortega, the Chief Inspector there.  He said voting was going well, with about about 350 people who had already voted so far.  Ortega went on to say that although there are 10,000 to 12,000 residents in the Canal District, only 1,600 are registered.

The Grassroots Leadership Network, a non-partisan group, was on hand to provide support and education for voters and to conduct exit polling for feedback to the County on how well the voting was going.  Grassroots is present at four polling places in the County.Grassroots Leadership Network table

Get ready, get set...and prepare to VOTE!  (That is if you aren't one of the thousands of early voters who have already done so!)  Don't forget to check out MoreMarin's Election 2008 before you go to the polls.  It's our handy guide to the Measures and Propositions.

Tuesday night, if you're in the mood to party a bit and don't want to settle down in front of the TV by yourself for hours upon hours of election night returns, then get yourself down to one of several events happening here in the County-

"Soak The Vote"- 5:00pm until the Election is called.  A performance art piece inspired by the quote from George H.W. Bush when he described convicted Taliban foot soldier, John Walker Lindh as "some misguided Marin County hot-tubber."   The artist, Lizabeth Eva Rossof, will invite participants to wear hot-tub attire and bring their peacock feathers to Illimigarden in Mill Valley.  The event will be documented for a later film.  35 Corte Madera Avenue, Mill Valley.  Cocktails, wine and cheese will be served.

GOP Party - 6:00pm until ??- Unless there is a major shift in voting trends in the next 24 hours, the Republican Election Night Party locale is likely to be on the 'subdued' side come Tuesday night.  Nevertheless, they are holding a 'night of celebration' at the Harbor Point Tennis and Swim Club at 475 E. Strawberry Drive, Mill Valley.  No host bar and free appetizers.

Dem Party - 8:00pm until the Election is called. Marin Democratic Headquarters in downtown San Rafael is certain to the place to party come Tuesday.   Streaming videos on a big screen TV, and light refreshments served.  Marin Democratic Headquarters, 1344 - 4th St, San Rafael.

MarinMaven website has a few other election night to-do's...check it out!

Election 2008- Measure G

For election results go here.

Measure G is almost exactly like Measure F.  It is a Measure that must be voted on every four years by Marinwood area residents to allow for expenditures on park and landscape maintenance services.  Measure G would authorize already collected tax monies for park and landscape maintenance, to actually be spent on those services.  It does not increase taxes.  It also allows for increase in spending, proportional to any increase in taxes collected with respect to park and landscape maintenance.

There is no opposition to Measure G.

Election 2008- Measure F

For election results go here.

Measure F is an every-four-years type of proposition that authorizes the spending of already collected tax dollars on fire and emergency services for Marinwood community residences and businesses in San Rafael.  It would also authorize the spending on fire and emergency services to increase proportional to the amount of taxes actually collected for these services.

Measure F does not increase taxes.  There was no argument against Measure F submitted.

Scary Halloween House Is No Treat For Youngsters

Halloween conjures up images of ghosts, witches and black cats to most people, but a San Rafael resident takes the scary theme one step further when he decorates his home with scenes from Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre.  And some people say the images are downright frightening, especially to youngsters who must walk past the house every day on their way to an elementary school down the street.
J.D.  Diego, who owns the house, says the scary figures are what Halloween is all about, and he pooh-poohs the naysayers who claim the gory scenes- complete with dismembered corpses and body parts- are too scary for kids.  Some parents say it's fine, but others claim he goes over the line with some images, including one of a nun holding crucifix in one hand, and a spine in the other.

Update- The IJ site seems to be down, so here's a look at a KTVU story on the scary house.

The IJ has the story including a short video interview with the owner.  Do you think it's too much or much ado about nothing?

State Legislature Approves Bill Requiring Public Review Before Spraying For Pests

The light brown apple moth Public hearings and health evaluations would have to take place before officials could order spraying in metropolitan areas to eradicate agricultural pests.  That bill, introduced by Assemblyman (D) Jared Huffman of San Rafael, was just approved in Sacramento.  He sponsored the bill after the huge public outcry after Dept of Agriculture officials announced plans to spray for the light brown apple moth here in Marin County, and the Bay Area.  The bill is being forwarded on to the desk of the Governor for signature.

Smile, You're On Traffic Enforcement Camera!

Smile...You're on Traffic Camera In San Rafael if you happen to run a red light and think you got away with it because there wasn't a cop around, think again. The first traffic cameras in Marin County are about to be installed in intersections in San Rafael by a firm called Redflex. They work like this; cameras will have sensors that will pick up any car traveling at a speed too fast to stop if the light turns red.  The camera will then snap multiple photos and there will also be a video online for the offender to view. It struck us as a bit like Big Brother and it struck one councilman that way too. The one dissenter in the 3-1 vote to approve had concerns over privacy.  Here's a KRON4 report...

Metallica Band Member Shows How NOT To Mend Fences With Neighbors

Check out the latest example of NIMBY.  A member of the heavy metal headliner band, Metallica, has erected a chain-link, barbed-wire fence across a road that runs through his property in Marin County.  The road connects two open space areas in Terra Linda hills that hikers, horseback riders and nature lovers have been enjoying for decades.  Frontman James Hetfield accuses the hikers of vandalism, and throwing wild parties on the property.  Users of the trail say that's ridiculous and he's simply closing off the road because he's decided to build a 14,000 square foot house and doesn't want anyone around.  It is his property, and County officials say he's within his right to bar anyone from walking through it.  We just think it's a bit funny to hear a metalhead complain about someone else throwing a wild party.  (Photo courtesy of www.beaugrande.com) Here's a KRON4 video report-

Full Steam Ahead Into The Blood Sucking Bug Business

Lice The first signs in kids are frequent head scratching.  Then, usually a closer examination reveals what no parent wants to see; lice.  Those tiny little bugs that attach themselves to a strand of hair so they can enjoy a nice warm-blooded meal before laying little eggs, called nits, and starting the whole retched cycle over again.   Parents everywhere, struggled to remove the stubborn little suckers employing an arsenal of pesticide laced shampoos and cremes, usually to no avail.  Enter NitPixies, a hair salon devoted strictly to the removal of head lice.  NitPixies just opened in San Rafael, and business is already brisk.  They eschew  pesticides focusing instead on picking out the bugs and nits by hand. It usually takes several sessions to get rid of the lice completely.  This is one business where being a nit-picker is a good thing!

Fire Burns Several Acres At China Camp State Park

The hot,dry weather is perfect for fires, and one broke out yesterday in San Rafael's China Camp State Park.  About six acres burned, and several horses were threatened, but firefighters responded quickly to contain the blaze.  Here's video from the IJ and an article.

Shake, Rattle & Roll- Predicting Earthquakes??

Can We Predict Quakes? Eighty devices are being installed deep into the earth, from Vancouver to Southern California, in an effort to predict possible earthquakes.  Marin County will get one of the devices; geologists are getting ready to sink one 760 feet deep into the earth in Lucas Valley!  Watch this ABC7 report to find out how the so-called 'strainmeters' are supposed to work.

Immigration Raids Anger Community

In the Canal District in San Rafael, many students at Bahia Elementary School wonder if their parents will be gone when they return home from school.  Worse, dozens of them are skipping school and staying home in fear that they themselves, may be deported.

Filling Up The Tank For Less In San Rafael

Gas_pump_in_car Ok, $3.90 for a gallon of gas isn't exactly...cheap.  But it is the least expensive gas you can find anywhere in Northern California, and it's right here in San Rafael.  Gas prices have climbed steadily, matching oil prices, which topped $126 a barrel on Monday.   Even though San Rafael's prices were pretty low by Bay Area standards, they are still among the highest in the country.

Skeleton Has Been Found

Skull Police in San Rafael have found the missing skeletal remains that match a skull found earlier this week. The mystery bones are that of a female, at least 30 years-of-age, and officials think the remains have been there somewhere between 2 and 30 years.  More tests will be performed to determine the age, race and circumstances of death, but results are not expected for several more weeks.  Police are asking anyone with information about missing persons to contact them.

Just Skulking Around...

Question_mark_black_graphic_2 You never know what you'll find under the blackberry bush.  Well, in San Rafael, someone clearing brush found a human skull under such a bush in his yard on Monday!  Experts in these kind of things, say the skull is not that of a Native American, leading them to wonder just who it belongs to.  Further tests are being conducted on the skull to determine race, age and gender. Hopefully, the mystery will be solved soon.
