Flying Objects Over Novato

Alien Several residents in Novato called 911 on Tuesday evening to report seeing "flying space debris" streaking across the night sky.  Firefighters who responded couldn't find a thing, but MoreMarin thinks they probably spotted the Leonids Meteor shower which occurs annually this time of year.

Feature!- Intuitive Animal Training In Marin

By Margaret Petrie-

Courtesy Gary Larson Many of us have chuckled at the Gary Larson cartoon of a man wordily reprimanding his dog and the dog only hearing "Blah, Blah, Blah."  But there are millions of people who would beg to differ.

Election Day 2008 - Novato Voters

Voting by the pool in Novato Bruce Nadler, a Clerk at the Ignacio Hills Apartment polling place in Novato, was standing by the pool and ushering in a steady stream of voters.  We asked him how this election turnout compared with the last time-

"It's like night and day.  We've had quite a nice flow all day," Nadler said.  When asked if there were any long lines, "Just this morning, we had a long line, about 25 people waiting when we opened."

Michelle Boudreau Michelle Boudreau is very excited-

"I felt a whole lot better this election- it's a better choice.  It hasn't been exciting for a long time.  And it's historic either way, even if the Republicans win with Sarah Palin as the Vice-President."

Lillian Liggans, a long-time Novato resident, has voted at this polling place for about 20 years. We asked if she was excited about the election-

Lillian Liggons "Yes!  I can't take another four years...I won't have enough money left!"

Lillian also felt strongly about voting for Measure Q, the SMART train Proposition.

"It's very important.  I look out my window and see that traffic every day, so I voted Yes on Q.  That Proposition was the most important to me."

Give Way To Pedestrians Or Risk A Ticket

Police issued nearly 50 citations to drivers in Novato who failed to yield to the pedestrians in six intersections on Tuesday.  It was a decoy sting operation with plainclothes police who pretended to be pedestrians and walked in the intersections only when the approaching vehicle was far enough away to come to a total stop.  If the car failed to stop, a nearby motorcycle cop would write the ticket after videotaping the violation.  The intersections in Novato were chosen because of high pedestrian rates.  So watch out drivers and give pedestrians the right of way; it's not  only the right thing to do, it's the law!

EPA To Fine Novato Pharmaceutical Company For Industrial Waste

The Novato Advance, which just announced their final publication, broke the story of the day yesterday.  BioMarin, based in Novato, has been fined $119,717 and an additional $50,000 by the Environmental Protection Agency, for violating the Clean Water Act on several occasions by dumping highly acidic water BioMarin into the sewer system which then discharges into the tidal flats of San Pablo Bay.  The extra $50k fine is to help clean up and restore Novato creek.  The EPA inspected BioMarin in May of 2007, and found the company violated standards on 62 separate days from 2004 through 2007.  BioMarin produces enzyme products used to treat diseases and other medical conditions.

Geese Doo Doo Causing Problems In Stafford Lake

The ubiquitous Canada geese found all over Marin County, is causing some real issues at Stafford Lake in Novato.  As KRON4 reports, the runoff from the feces is creating huge algae blooms in the water, which is used by up to a quarter of the unlucky folks in Novato.

86 Years Of Publication End This Month- Say Goodbye To The Novato Advance

Eight decades is a lot of years and that's how long the Novato Advance newspaper has been around.  But it will come to an end on September 25 which is the last date of publication.  1999 was their last profitable year due to the growing trend to internet, cable and other new media information streams.  This trend has impacted newspaper publications nationwide, not just the Novato Advance.  Even though we at MoreMarin are part of the new media, we are extremely sad when a newspaper folds, and especially one in our backyard.

Mountain Lion Sighted In Marin County

Mountain lion A mountain light was seen in the Bahia neighborhood in Novato, on Tuesday afternoon.  A resident, Ron Davis, spotted the animal sitting near a fence around 3:30pm.  Officials believe from his description, that it was young perhaps weighing 50 or 60 pounds.  Mountain lions, or cougars, are present all over North America and usually hunt deer and other animals but have been known to attack humans.  (the photo is courtesy of Wikipedia, and is NOT the mountain lion spotted in Marin)

Marin Winery Feature- Pacheco Ranch Winery

Pacheco Ranch vineyards If you happen to find yourself driving south on Highway 101 through Novato in the Hamilton area, you might catch a glimpse of some vineyards climbing up the side of the hill.  Vineyards are not a common sight here in Marin, even though we sit next door to the prolific wine-producing counties of Napa and Sonoma.  But there are several vineyards and wineries in Marin, and the winery that sits behind those vineyards in Novato, is the oldest in the county.  Check it out in MoreEats!

Novato Airplane Runway Extension Stirs Debate

Gnoss Field courtesy of Novato Advance The runway at Gnoss Field is 3,300 feet long and 40 years old and it does not currently meet FAA guidelines for size.  There is a proposal to lengthen the relatively ancient runway in Novato by about 1,100 feet, but locals are not thrilled with the idea.  The airfield, just north of Novato and on the east side of Hwy 101, services smaller private aircraft.  The issue is the runway does not currently accommodate larger business type jets, or even smaller planes that are fully loaded with people or fuel.  Residents claim the airstrip is prone to accidents and the soil was too soft to support larger planes.  Looks like the decision to extend the runway could be up in the air for awhile.   (Photo courtesy Novato Advance)

Novato businessman and owner of Kesh Air International in Bel Marin Keys, 48 year-old Hassan Saied Keshari, was arrested Friday night at Miami Int'l Airport, and charged with illegally exporting military aircraft parts to Iran.  Another man was also arrested, at his home in Miami.  Both are accused of arranging shipments of U.S. manufactured military aircraft parts including the CH-53 military helicopter, the F-14 Tomcat fighter jet and the AH-1 attack helicopter to Iran since 2006.  Keshari is looking at 20 years in prison, and up to $1 million in fines if convicted.  The IJ has more...

Rough Times In Novato

Economy woes have hit our neighbors in Northern Marin pretty hard lately.  The Novato Unified School District just laid off 21 people, although all but one of the positions were part-time.  More positions will be eliminated next year mostly through attrition and retirement.  And Novato water rates will go up 11% beginning July 1st, just as officials are asking Marinites to conserve their water usage after two dry years.  And if that isn't enough, the real estate crunch is striking Novato hard, as those homes appear to be dropping in value more than other areas of Marin.  The Marin IJ says Novato also leads the county in foreclosures.

Marin Schools Distinguish Themselves!

Lu Sutton, Rancho Elementary, Ross School and Bayside Elementary Schools have received "distinguished schools" status by the California department of education.  That's a big honor, when only 343 of the 5,250 elementary schools in the entire state are picked.  Way to go!

Over-exposure in Novato!

Motorists taking the Roblar Drive offramp in Novato on Monday, got a bit more than they bargained for as they exited off Hwy 101.  Hayvenn Lester Shakur, 32, was arrested for indecent exposure after he was seen motioning at motorists, while exposing himself.  Shakur, from Oakland, was charged with indecent exposure. MoreMarin wonders if there is such a thing as decent exposure???

Going Down In Smoke In Novato

Thinking about lighting up a ciggie while walking in the park?  Want to grab a smoke while taking in the soccer game?  Not if Novato has its way.  It's set to pass the toughest secondhand smoke ordinance in Marin, as detailed in this IJ article.  If passed, violators could face fines ranging into several hundred dollars and community service.  Do you think the secondhand smoking laws are too stringent?
