He Surfs, He Skateboards, He Paints- Here's Another Look At Ian Ross

Earlier this year MoreMarin profiled artist Ian Ross during Marin Open Studios.  His 'live painting' performances are all over YouTube, but VIMBY (Video In My BackYard) has an incredible new internet video that really captures Ian's art.  Take a look-

FBI Probe Of Company Linked To Fernwood Cemetery

Fernwood Cemetery The FBI is conducting a probe of National Prearranged Services (NPS), a preneed funeral company that had promised burial services totaling in the hundreds of millions of dollars in several states, before becoming insolvent.

NPS is owned by a family that also owns the Fernwood Cemetery, here in Marin County.  MoreMarin was the first in the Bay Area to bring you the story of Fernwood and its link to NPS back in July.

Election Day 2008 - A Marin County Look

Obama supporter GOP ladies in red If the Republicans are the Party of Joe the Plumber, and the Democrats are the Party of the Elite, then someone forgot to tell the Marin folks that.

Marin Democrats celebrated the historic victory of Barack Obama while spilling out of a tiny, overcrowded storefront on 4th Street in downtown San Rafael, while the GOP tried their best to put a good face on the resounding defeat of John McCain at the Harbor Point Tennis and Swim Club in Strawberry.

Election Night Events In Marin

Get ready, get set...and prepare to VOTE!  (That is if you aren't one of the thousands of early voters who have already done so!)  Don't forget to check out MoreMarin's Election 2008 before you go to the polls.  It's our handy guide to the Measures and Propositions.

Tuesday night, if you're in the mood to party a bit and don't want to settle down in front of the TV by yourself for hours upon hours of election night returns, then get yourself down to one of several events happening here in the County-

"Soak The Vote"- 5:00pm until the Election is called.  A performance art piece inspired by the quote from George H.W. Bush when he described convicted Taliban foot soldier, John Walker Lindh as "some misguided Marin County hot-tubber."   The artist, Lizabeth Eva Rossof, will invite participants to wear hot-tub attire and bring their peacock feathers to Illimigarden in Mill Valley.  The event will be documented for a later film.  35 Corte Madera Avenue, Mill Valley.  Cocktails, wine and cheese will be served.

GOP Party - 6:00pm until ??- Unless there is a major shift in voting trends in the next 24 hours, the Republican Election Night Party locale is likely to be on the 'subdued' side come Tuesday night.  Nevertheless, they are holding a 'night of celebration' at the Harbor Point Tennis and Swim Club at 475 E. Strawberry Drive, Mill Valley.  No host bar and free appetizers.

Dem Party - 8:00pm until the Election is called. Marin Democratic Headquarters in downtown San Rafael is certain to the place to party come Tuesday.   Streaming videos on a big screen TV, and light refreshments served.  Marin Democratic Headquarters, 1344 - 4th St, San Rafael.

MarinMaven website has a few other election night to-do's...check it out!

Possible Battle Looming For The National Park Service In Tamalpais Valley

Eucalyptus trees are ubiquitous in the Bay Area, and Marin County is no exception.  The non-native trees, which can grow to towering heights, are also extreme fire hazards.  They can ignite like matchsticks due to the natural oils within the tree, and were a significant contributing factor to the spread of the Oakland Hills Firestorm of 1991 that destroyed 3,000 homes and claimed 25 lives.  Now the National Park Service wants to remove a large area of mature "eucs" from an area along Highway 1 in Tamalpais Valley, and the residents there aren't too thrilled with the idea- KRON4 reports.

One Whole Foods Not Enough In Mill Valley

Just a few days ago, we told you about how Whole Foods has been experiencing partial profits due to the U.S. economic downturn.  But apparently things are hunky-dory for Whole Foods here in the County; especially Mill Valley.  There is already one store on Miller Avenue, but also plans to open another market in the old Albertson's grocery store building across town on E.Blithedale.  Of course, there is no official word on when the 'other' Whole Foods will be opening.  In a somewhat ambiguous statement, one Whole Food exec was quoted in the Marin IJ as saying-

"It's gone through the design process and we'll commit to a date sometime in the near future when we figure out what we're going to be doing there."

What's to figure out?  MoreMarin suspects they may be re-thinking the Whole Idea.

MoreMarin Exclusive- Fernwood Cemetery In Mill Valley Linked To Billion Dollar Scandal

Forever Fernwood Cemetery No one likes to think about death.  But not to worry, there is a whole industry devoted to creating a final, peaceful resting place for your remains.  The newest entrants in the funeral biz, are green cemeteries and burial grounds.

Forever Fernwood Cemetery in Mill Valley, is one of those places.

It is owned by a Missouri family, who've made a fortune in the so-called 'death-care' business.  But the simultaneous collapse of several family owned, death-related businesses, culminating in losses of nearly a billion dollars, calls into question the viability of this cemetery, green or otherwise.

Mill Valley Hires "Green" Coordinator

Her title is 'sustainability coordinator' and for 30k a year, 49 year-old Carol Misseldine, advises Mill Valley officials and residents, on how best to tackle global warming, plastic waste and fossil fuel use in their city.   Misseldine uses a process developed in Sweden, called The Natural Step, to inform and instill changes in consumer habits.  The job is for one year, and the only position of its kind held in any city in Marin.  Mill Valley appears to be taking the green lead, as they were the first Marin city to ban plastics for City purposes.  Read more in the IJ about Misseldine and her green efforts.

Mill Valley Woman Arrested In Hells Angel Homicide

A 20 year-old Mill Valley woman, Jessica Andrea Gordon, was arrested along with 19 year-old Joseph Andrew Farnsworth of El Cerrito, for the shooting death of William Crompton Maclean last weekend.  Maclean was riding in a pickup truck leading a procession of Hells Angels motorcycle riders when he was shot, apparently by Farnsworth, in what the Marin Sheriff says was a case of road rage.  The Sonoma County chapter of Hells Angels is sponsoring their annual Marin County Poker Run and BBQ motorcycle ride through Marin county today, and law enforcement officials are bracing for a much larger turnout in response to the shooting.  The victim was the brother-in-law of the head of the Sonoma county chapter.

Tam High School Celebrates 100th Birthday

Get out the party hats and make some noise!   Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, the county's oldest high school, celebrates its centennial.  Tam has a rich history, and many alumni are expected to attend the many events planned for the centennial celebration this Memorial Day weekend.  The school, which sits on the side of a hill off Miller Avenue, has been undergoing renovations which are expected to be complete in about a year.  Marin filmmaker George Lucas, who once lived in Mill Valley, filmed his sock hop scene from "American Graffiti" in the school's gym.  Anyone wishing to re-live a bit of their high school years, is encouraged to come on down to Tam and join the fun.  Happy Birthday Tam!!

EPA To Marin: Fix The Sewage Spewage!

The Environmental Protection Agency told southern Marin County to clean up its act and fix the decrepit sewer system, or face more problems like the sewage spills that plagued the County in January.  Huge amounts of rain, deteriorating pipes and a series of errors caused millions of gallons of raw sewage on January 25th and 31st.  February wasn't much better, as several smaller spills in other parts of Marin spilled into the Bay. Pretty embarrassing for a county that considers itself environmentally friendly.
