What if Marin towns and communities had the option of printing their own money. You could call them Greenbrae Greenbacks, Corte Madera Cash or even Belvedere Bux. Think that's bizarre?
Well about a dozen communities, including even Detroit, have already done just that; printed their own currency in order to keep local businesses going amidst the economic downturn.
It's an idea rooted in the Depression. Retailers and service providers form a group that print their own money or 'scrip' bills. The scrip is purchased at a discount by consumers who then, must spend it at participating businesses, thereby keeping the money in the community.
So maybe the idea of Muir Beach Moolah isn't so strange after all.
