Marin County Breast Cancer Research Project Launched

Mammogram showing breast cancer at arrow For years, Marin County has had one of the highest rates of breast cancer anywhere in California.  The 'alarming' rates, have prompted Marin County Department of Health and Human Services- along with several health agencies- to conduct a wide and far-reaching breast cancer research project aimed at providing some answers.  In what health officials have labeled the largest and most intensive breast cancer study ever, they've begun collecting saliva samples, mammogram results and answers to a 20 page questionnaire from over 10,000 Marin women.   Researchers expect the first clues in about a year.

Christopher Ciccione Gives The Scoop On Growing Up With The Most Famous Sister Of All- Madonna

Madonna She recently turned 50 and she's still fabulous.  Madonna, who managed to morph from the siren-of-sex to the mom-next-door, is the single most successful solo female artist of all time.  Now we get to hear what it was like growing up with Madonna Louise Ciccone from someone who knows- her brother Christopher.  He'll be at the Book Passage in Corte Madera next week, on Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00pm to talk about life with one of the most famous female singers in history.  It's all detailed in his newly released book, "Life With My Sister Madonna."  We're not sure he plans to reveal any surprises about the vampy singer, but you never know.

Sarah Who?

Governor Sarah Palin It's clear that Senator McCain is his own man.  In picking the relatively unknown, highly conservative female Governor of Alaska, he clearly wanted to be seen as a maverick.  At 44 years old, Sarah Palin is younger than Obama and enjoys a huge 85 to 90% approval rating in her state.  As a hunter and lifelong NRA member and pro-choice anti-abortion advocate, she will make the conservatives happy.  The fact that she is a woman may make the unhappy Hillary supporters consider moving to the McCain side.  But her relatively short political resume and the fact that she remains a 'heartbeat' away from the Presidency, especially with a 72 year-old running mate, makes a lot of people uneasy.  One thing is clear, the pick of Palin, is a huge risk that could pay off big-time or make his candidacy go down in flames.

Obama Delivers

Obama in Denver/Getty photo "This moment -- this election -- is our chance to keep, in the 21st century, the American promise alive."

"We are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight."

"For the sake of our economy, our security and the future of our planet, I will set a clear goal as President: In 10 years, we will finally end our dependence on oil from the Middle East."

"Senator McCain likes to talk about judgment, but really, what does it say about your judgment when you think George Bush was right more than 90 percent of the time?"

"We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country.  Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe."

"I've got news for you, John McCain. We all put our country first."

"Change means a tax code that doesn't reward the lobbyists who wrote it, but the American workers and small businesses who deserve it."

"Washington has been talking about oil addiction for the last 30 years, and John McCain has been there for 26 of them."

"On November 4th, we must stand up and say: 'Eight is enough."

"Now, I don't believe that Senator McCain doesn't care what's going on in the lives of Americans. I just think he doesn't know."

"John McCain likes to say that he'll follow bin Laden to the Gates of Hell - but he won't even go to the cave where he lives."

"America, we are better than the last eight years.  We are a better country than this."

State Legislature Approves Bill Requiring Public Review Before Spraying For Pests

The light brown apple moth Public hearings and health evaluations would have to take place before officials could order spraying in metropolitan areas to eradicate agricultural pests.  That bill, introduced by Assemblyman (D) Jared Huffman of San Rafael, was just approved in Sacramento.  He sponsored the bill after the huge public outcry after Dept of Agriculture officials announced plans to spray for the light brown apple moth here in Marin County, and the Bay Area.  The bill is being forwarded on to the desk of the Governor for signature.

Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Barrier Poll- Half Are For It And Half Against It

Barrier? Now it's the Golden Gate Bridge District's decision.  They sought the publics opinion on whether or not to build a suicide barrier- and if so- which design.  The poll closed on Monday, and a little over 50% of respondents want some type of barrier, while just under 50% oppose it.  A few months ago, the 'anti-barrier' votes were way ahead but it looks like a push from the 'pro-barrier' folks managed to even it up.  The Bridge district will make some sort of decision in October and although they will consider the publics opinion, they won't make their decision based solely on it.  The five barrier options which will cost between $40 to $50 million dollars, include designs for an 8 feet high steel fence extensions and a net underneath the bridge.  Whatever choice they make for the iconic bridge- be it barrier or no barrier- is sure to be controversial.

Herbal Medicines Found To Contain Toxins

Have a little arsenic with your herbals.  Or maybe some lead and mercury?  A large proportion of Ayurvedic herbal medicines, commonly originating in India and sold here in the U.S., have been found to contain these toxins according to a just released study in the Journal of American Medicine Association (JAMA).  The study used the internet to find 25 different websites offering the traditional Ayurvedic herbs, and then tested the herbs. One fifth of the herbs contained arsenic, mercury or lead. Not very healthy.

Spare The Air Day For Bay Area Today

Avoid the strenuous exercises outside and try and drive a little less. That's the word from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District which has declared a "Spare The Air" day today due to unhealthy ozone levels.  It doesn't help that temperatures are zooming up and may even break some records by weeks end.  Earlier this week, officials issued a red flag alert for parts of the North Bay alerting residents about fire dangers.  Bottom line, stay cool and stay inside if possible.

Judge Rules In UC Berkeley's Favor For Construction Of Athletic Center

Still up in a tree Don't expect the bulldozers just yet.  Even though Superior Court Judge Barbara Miller just ruled to allow the University of California to move ahead with its controversial plans to build an athletic center on the site of a tree grove, they won't be building just yet.  The UC officials agreed to wait until an expected appeal is filed.  Three tree-sitters are still perched in the tree-tops of a couple of tall trees in the middle of the grove.  They've been waiting out the case, which has battled back and forth in the courts for the last year-and-a-half.  A few days ago, the University sawed off several branches of the tree the trio is sitting on, in order to limit their movements.  Looks like the waiting game will go on for a little while at least.

TB Scare In SF Kaiser Hospital Maternity Ward

A former employee who worked in the maternity ward at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in SF was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis, and may have exposed nearly a thousand patients and other employees to the disease.  Kaiser is working quickly to contact all those people who were exposed.  The worker with TB is no longer with Kaiser.  Although the health officials feel the risk is low, they are encouraging those contacted to get a skin test and if necessary, a chest X-ray.  If infected, it is a strain that can be treated with antibiotics.  TB while fairly rare here in the U.S., is common in other parts of the planet.

Hillary Clinton Speech A Huge Hit At Convention

"No way, no how, no McCain!  Barack Obama is my candidate.  And he must be our President."

Hillary/Courtesy CNN Hillary's battle cry rang out in Denver as she called upon supporters to unify behind Obama's candidacy, and it was clear from the crowd's reaction, she had hit a home run.  Senator Clinton, dressed in her signature pant-suit- this one an eye-popping orange- wowed the crowd with her references to Harriet Tubman, the fight for national health care and similarities between Senator McCain and President Bush.  A quip about "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuit" a reference to her many campaign appearances on the road during the primary, drew the most laughs. Now it's Obama's turn to wow the crowds on Thursday, and Hillary will be there to cheer him on but we hear that Bill will not.  Talk about a sore loser.

Pay Your Library Fine...Or Else Face Arrest

Return these on time! Things must be pretty slow crime-wise in Grafton, Wisconsin.  A woman there was handcuffed, arrested and booked for failing to pay a library fine.  Twenty year-old Heidi Dalibor apparantly ignored requests, phone calls and letters to pay her delinquent library fine.  When she ignored the notice to appear in court; the police went a-knockin.  When she opened the door, they handcuffed her and took her down to the station to be fingerprinted, photographed and booked.  Dalibor paid her $30 overdue fine, but her mom got stuck with the $172 it cost to release her.

MSG Use Can Make You Fat

No MSG thanks A lot of restaurants have banned the use of MSG or monosodium glutamate, an additive that is supposed to make the food taste better, but has been linked to allergic reaction and other health issues.  Now there is even more reason to avoid it; it can make you fat.  Researchers in China studied several hundred men and women where MSG use was rampant. They found that the one third of the group who used the heaviest amounts of MSG were almost three times as likely to be overweight.  Researchers do not yet know why MSG causes people to gain weight, but they advise consumers to be 'cautious' about its use.  So hold the MSG and enjoy your Kung Pao chicken.

Man Dies In Alcatraz Swim

Alcatraz It was nearly impossible to escape from Alcatraz alive in its prison heydey, and it seems the Rock has claimed another life.  A 63 year-old man swimming a leg in the Escape From The Rock Triathlon this past Sunday, collapsed and died from heart failure while just 100 yards away from the finish at the SF shoreline.  Phillip Coulston, who had no history of heart problems, had recently taken up swimming again, after competing in the sport as a teenager and in college.  His son-in-law who was swimming with him, tried to revive him, but was unable to save Coulston.

Larkspur Ferry Terminal Pipe Breaks Spilling 1,000 Gallons Of Raw Sewage

Sewage spill at Larkspur ferry terminal It happened again.  Another sewage spill.  From Marin County into the Bay.  This time it was a pipe break at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal, discovered yesterday morning.  About 1,000 gallons of raw sewage poured into the Bay, after a section of pipe broke free after the rusted hangars that held it in place fell away.  The manager of ferry operations said an inspection performed during the last year showed that new pipes were needed.  The pipe that broke carried sewage from away boats at dock.  Signs were out at the shoreline warning people not to go into the water until testing has determined it is safe.  The area along the ferry is popular with windsurfers and rowers.  It's the latest in a series of spills with two huge spills in January, followed by several smaller spills in February, then another in May and a 6,000 gallon sewage spill earlier this month which closed a beach in Sausalito.  Here's a newsflash to the folks at the County.  REPLACE THE DAMN PIPES...NOW!

Sniffing Out The Skin Cancer

Governor Proposes Temporary Sales Tax Hike To Solve The Yawning California State Budget Gap

Photo by AP Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has decided to swallow the bitter pill of a tax increase.  He has proposed a temporary one-cent sales tax increase for three years, but it's going to be a hard sell to legislators who have listened to his vocal no-tax stance for years.   The Governator insists it's the only thing left to do to close the huge $15 billion shortfall in the state budget, and he does not want to make any further cuts or borrow more, as other GOP leaders have suggested.  He said he would veto anything that contained proposals for additional borrowing, which he called a "get out of town" budget.  He is especially peeved because the Repubs are the only ones who have not submitted a budget that does not call for more borrowing.  Said the Governor-

"Lock the building and don't let anyone leave until there's a budget."

And then not so jokingly, he suggested that the lawmakers may have to spend Thanksgiving at the Capitol.

Obama Picks Biden

Obama-Biden It's officially Biden.  In picking the veteran Senator from Delaware, Obama can hope to collect the Catholic, blue collar and Irish voters who may not have otherwise voted for him.  Biden brings over three decades of experience to the ticket which should stop the 'no experience' naysayers in their tracks.  The only negative is that Biden isn't a great orator, sometimes going on and on in his speeches.  That shouldn't be a problem here, though, if Obama- a great orator- does all the talking.  The two will make their first campaign appearance together today in Springfield, IL where Obama launched his run for President.

UC Berkeley Trimming The Tree Sitters From Their Perch

Tree sitters camp Those persistent tree sitters who've been perched up in the trees near UC Berkeley's Memorial Stadium for almost two years, are feeling some heat.  Cal officials trimmed nearly 30 branches from the tree they are sitting on and other nearby trees, in order to prevent 'tree-hopping' by the activists.   They also want to contain the three remaining sitters to one tree in order to free up campus police resources for returning students.  The tree-sitters have been protesting plans to build an athletic center on the property which would require removal of the trees.  Construction of the center has been held up in court for several months, but UC officials hope to get final approval in a hearing next week.  Once the legal issues are resolved, the University is likely to take more aggressive action to remove the tree-sitters, and that may provoke a fight.  One tree-sitter vowed to be taken down only as a 'dead man.'  Look here for an ABC7 video report.

Bedbugs Welcome College Students Back Into The Dorms

Bedbugs everywhere "They're taking off right now," says Dan Mizer, associate director of residence life at Texas A&M University.

He's talking about bedbugs, those tiny, bloodsucking nocturnal pests which have made a recent unwelcome return to beds in apartments and hotel rooms in NYC, and now appear to have crawled their way onto college campuses nationwide.  Ohio State, Texas A & M and the University of Florida are some of the colleges infested with the icky bugs and experts point to several reasons- an increase in international travel, larger bedbug populations worldwide, less pesticide spraying and maybe tougher bugs that resist spraying.  The bug, which leaves itchy welts after it bites, can hang out for up to a year without a blood meal so the summer respite is not an issue while it waits for students to return to school in the Fall.  That really bites.

Novato Airplane Runway Extension Stirs Debate

Gnoss Field courtesy of Novato Advance The runway at Gnoss Field is 3,300 feet long and 40 years old and it does not currently meet FAA guidelines for size.  There is a proposal to lengthen the relatively ancient runway in Novato by about 1,100 feet, but locals are not thrilled with the idea.  The airfield, just north of Novato and on the east side of Hwy 101, services smaller private aircraft.  The issue is the runway does not currently accommodate larger business type jets, or even smaller planes that are fully loaded with people or fuel.  Residents claim the airstrip is prone to accidents and the soil was too soft to support larger planes.  Looks like the decision to extend the runway could be up in the air for awhile.   (Photo courtesy Novato Advance)

It struck us as a bit like Big Brother and it struck one councilman that way too. The one dissenter in the 3-1 vote to approve had concerns over privacy.  Here's a KRON4 report...

No Budget, No Convention

Legislators have been asked not to leave Sacramento for the national political conventions which start next Monday, until they pass the state budget.  Governor Schwarzenegger left no doubt as to his feelings-

"I recommend everyone to stay here until we have a budget and not for anyone to leave," Schwarzenegger said. "Absolutely."

California is in serious trouble with a deficit of $15.2 billion dollars and the budget impasse has caused the Governor to slash jobs and cut salaries which prompted a fight with his controller, John Chiang.  The legislators said they don't mind skipping the conventions to get the job done.  We certainly hope so.

Full Steam Ahead Into The Blood Sucking Bug Business

Lice The first signs in kids are frequent head scratching.  Then, usually a closer examination reveals what no parent wants to see; lice.  Those tiny little bugs that attach themselves to a strand of hair so they can enjoy a nice warm-blooded meal before laying little eggs, called nits, and starting the whole retched cycle over again.   Parents everywhere, struggled to remove the stubborn little suckers employing an arsenal of pesticide laced shampoos and cremes, usually to no avail.  Enter NitPixies, a hair salon devoted strictly to the removal of head lice.  NitPixies just opened in San Rafael, and business is already brisk.  They eschew  pesticides focusing instead on picking out the bugs and nits by hand. It usually takes several sessions to get rid of the lice completely.  This is one business where being a nit-picker is a good thing!
