Vitamin D Deficiency Rampant- Tests Soar
Sitting in the sun is something most people avoid due to increased awareness of skin cancer. But doctors are beginning to advise patients, both young and old, to do just that.
There seems to be a huge increase in Vitamin D deficiency in both children and adults, and doctors are worried that enough people aren't getting treated. Bone experts say it is much more of a problem than they initially suspected. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to increased risk of osteoporosis, soft and weak bones, certain cancers and cardiovascular problems. Vitamin D is found in certain foods- oily fishes, fortified milk and eggs. But it can only be synthesized in the body by exposure to sunlight. Doctors are encouraging patients to spend at least fifteen minutes a day in the sun. Sounds like a great idea to us.
